CHARACTER NAME
Grant Middleton

CHARACTER AGE
28

BACKGROUND & HISTORY:

Grant was born in Siren Cove to Oscar and Lily Middleton. He is their only child, and it shows. Grant's great-grandparents moved to Siren Cove as newly weds, his grandfather having met one of the Thornton men at a business meeting and deciding to put his hardly-earned (more inherited) money into some real estate around town. The Middletons are very proud of their heritage and status is key. They decided to move away and send their son to an extremely expensive boarding school. After he graduated, he was sent to an equally expensive university to study business. He struggled in college, but got his degree and immediately became a grad student where he studied...more business. Grant has never been particularly interested in the subject, though between his genes and being around sharp businessmen all his life, he can certainly drive a hard bargain and broker deals like no tomorrow. He just finds it boring. After failing to maintain one of his father's new businesses, designed just for Grant, he decided to branch off on his own. He told his parents he just wasn't cut out for business and went into a completely different field - law enforcement. Now, after about three years on the force, Grant really needed to get away and called up his old best friend, James Thornton. James helped get him an interview with SCPD and was hired almost on the spot. He's just recently moved back to Siren Cove, but the failed business and desire for something different were not his only motivation for moving. After entering the force, Grant learned that he comes from a family of men who were notorious for cheating on their wives. The wives knew it, but they were expected to keep their mouths closed and keep up the family's social image. Having always adored his mother Lily, Grant lost all respect for his father. He grew angry and would often get into a yelling match anytime he was expected to make a presence with them. It hurt to move away from his mom, but he couldn't just attend anymore Friday dinner parties with his parents and pretend they were a happy, healthy family. Not knowing how that man treated her. He hasn't talked to his father in eight months.

PERSONALITY
Grant is cocky and spoiled. He's been handed the world on a silver platter and even though he wants to make his own name, he has never quite been on his own. Grocery shopping? That was always done for him. Bills? Their accountants handled those. He gets annoyed with the everyday expectations of normal adults, especially when someone points out that he doens't quite know what the hell he's doing. His greatest strength is his charisma. Most of what he gets is by using his charm and his smile. He's also biased when it comes to the whole magic vs. non-magic thing. Growing up close to the Thorntons, Grant tends to look down on anyone of the magical persuasion. But with business in his blood, he understands that if you want to get anywhere in life, you can't piss off the whole town. He knows when to turn on the good-guy charms and leave a good impression with most of the people he meets. But he can also be an asshole.

OPINION OF THE RIVALRY
He's almost as close to the rivalry as the Thorntons. Though his family wasn't around to experience the beginning of it, he's absorbed the prejudices of the Thornton family.

LIFESTYLE
Though his pay as a police office isn't much, Grant gained access to his trust-fund as soon as he turned 21. He could retire right now. He had a good six months after he got his money where he did absolutely nothing but party and buy ridiculous things he didn't need. It was heaven. Until everything got boring and the parties he threw almost every night became annoying. After that, he's been much more responsible with his money and decided he needed to work for a living or he'd drive himself insane. He now works with SCPD. He just bought a lavish condominium on the nicer side of town.

HEADCANONS
  • Grant's coping mechanism is to lay on the charm and refer back to his looks.
  • He tends to be sassy and sarcastic, especially when Alex is around.

CURRENT STORYLINES
  • Where the Fuck is James - Grant and Alex noticed James missing when he didn't show up to work and left his TV on at his house. They searched the old chapel and surrounding area only to be attacked and driven off the road by a thick, black mist. Grant broke his nose in the process, a fact that really pissed him off. He's super duper over this curse shit.
  • Understanding Magic - Even though he grew up around the Thorntons and learned to not trust magic or witches, Grant's developed a fascination with Valeria Jung. He's trying to understand her magic a bit more, but he still thinks it's weird and gets awkward when she uses it around him. The important thing is, he's trying

CURRENT RELATIONSHIPS
  • James Thornon - James has been Grant's best friend since they were young. Raised together, especially since their families ran in the same circles, Grant trusts James with his life and will do anything for his friend. Since returning to Siren Cove and accepting a job with SCPD, James and Grant have become partners. He especially loves to annoy James by being a shitty cop even though he's a completely competent policeman.
  • Alex Castillo - Alex is also Grant's best friend. He adores her like the little sister he never had and loves to work with her to make James uncomfortable. Put Grant and Alex together and you have a mess. Their priorities take a turn for the worst and they become nothing but sassy with everyone around them. Grant's used to coming home from work and finding Alex on his couch, watching her shows on his television.
  • Bach Jones - Grant ran into Bach when he first moved in and has taken the man under his wing, determined to teach him a few of the finer things of life. This isn't the first time he's met the musician--his family used to hire Bach to play at parties and lunches. He likes to think of himself as Bach's fairy godmother, pointing out the hideousness of his old scarf and how much he looks like a hobo. Maybe one day the musician will let him do a makeover.
  • Valeria Jung - She's infuriating. They rub each other the wrong way and did not start their relationship on the right foot. She's a witch and he's prejudiced. But over time, he's started to become fond of Val. She makes him angry, but he also worries about her. And for some unknown reason, he's grown to trust her, even when she asks to perform magic on him. He's slowly learning that not all magic is bad and with everything going on, Val's magic is a blessing. It also doesn't help that he finds himself drawn to her. She's beautiful and feisty, exactly what he's drawn to. Grant digs her.

Outside the Condo {OPEN}
Grant glanced up from his phone when he felt a shadow hang over him and found a giant, behemoth of a man who didn't speak much but grunted a lot at the other two movers. "Hmm? Oh, just put everything in the living room. I'll take care of it all later. Thanks."

He went back to his phone, typing rapidly as he replied to text after text from his mom. He grinned to himself. She was a worrier, always had been, always will be. And this was the first time her only child lived further than an hour away from her. So he was distracted when he heard a crash and looked up to see a hundred year old dresser on the ground.

"Hey! Careful! That dresser is worth ten times your pay today!" The movers all grunted, which Grant assumed was an apology. He swore under his breath, immediately tattling on the movers to his mom who was, unsurprisingly, pissed at the thought of any Middleton furniture being treated so carelessly. He shook his head. It was a shitty old dresser that belonged to his uncle and really not worth getting angry over. He hated the thing anyway -  it was fifty shades of ugly. He hated most of the things coming out of the truck. But appearances are key, and if any of his family happened to come for a visit, they'd expect to see certain key pieces on proud display in his home. Even if the crap clashed horribly with his home.

He sighed and asked how much longer the move would take. When he got a "One more hour" out of the movers, he groaned. Moving sucked. Moving really sucked when you were slightly hung over and wanted a nap.
